Is Dental Sedation Safe?

Yes. Dental sedation is very safe. Dr. Kory Kirkegaard and our team are fully trained in the latest techniques and best practices for sedating patients with many types of sedation. From nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation (a pill) all the way up to IV sedation with the help of a specially trained Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)!. The drugs used to sedate patients have been used successfully for decades, and complications of any kind are extremely rare.

To ensure that you’re a good candidate and can be sedated safely, our team will also review your medical history, as well as a list of any medications or supplements that you’re taking. And during your appointment, we will keep a close eye on you and your vital signs to make sure that everything looks good. When you come to The Art of Dentistry for sedation dentistry in Overland Park, KS, you’ll be in good hands with Dr. Kirkegaard and our team.

Can I Get Sedation For Any Appointment?

Yes. If you’re a good candidate for dental sedation, we can offer dental sedation for just about any appointment. For example, many patients with dental anxiety choose to get nitrous oxide sedation when they need a filling, since this makes it easier to get the treatment they need.  Nitrous oxide is very nice because you can drive yourself to and from your appointment! Some people also choose to have IV sedation for more complex smile makeovers/smile rejuvinations or for more advanced implant surgeries.

Whether it’s something as simple as a six-month teeth cleaning or a more complicated procedure like getting dental implants, Dr. Kirkegaard and our team are here for you. Just let us know that you’re interested in sedation, and we can help you explore all of your options.

Will Insurance Cover The Cost Of Dental Sedation?

Unfortunately, the answer is usually “no.” Most standard dental plans will not cover the cost of dental sedation. While your dental plan may cover the cost of treatments like root canals, most providers do not cover the cost of dental sedation, since it’s seen as an optional service.

However, we do offer financing options and we do our best to keep prices reasonable, which helps you get the care you need in Overland Park. And if you don’t have dental insurance, you can join our Membership Plan. All of our plans include all necessary preventive care, as well as a 10% discount on all other treatments..

Can I Drive Myself Home After My Appointment?

This depends on the type of sedation that you choose. If you need to drive yourself home or go back to work after your appointment at The Art of Dentistry, you should choose nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation. One of the biggest benefits of laughing gas is that it wears off after about five minutes. Once your procedure is over, you’ll recover and you’ll be able to get back to your routine right away, and that includes driving yourself home or back to work or school.

However, if you want oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, you cannot drive yourself to or from The Art of Dentistry. The sedatives used for this type of sedation take much longer to wear off, and will impair your motor skills and decision-making, which means you should not drive after your appointment. You will need a responsible adult to come with you to drive you to and from The Art of Dentistry if you choose oral or IV sedation.
